New feature: Change day start and end times

23rd July 2014 | Alex K

As part of a major upgrade, Ganttology now allows users to set the start and end times for a day. Previously, days ran from 0:00 to 24:00 and there was nothing you could do about it. You can now set a gantt chart up so that the day extends from 9:00 to 18:00 - the standard working day for many organisations - or to 8:00 to 17:00, or any start and end time that you want.

This might not sound like the most exciting new feature but it has entailed a major rewrite of our layout engine. It also has the potential to open up our software for new uses. You could now, for example, use Ganttology to plan a conference, using the task bars to define the time and duration of speeches, presentations or events.

The new day-start-end functionality is designed to work nicely with our 'Snap to' options (accessible from the Chart Settings panel for your chart). If you decide that chart tasks should snap-to the start of a day, they will snap to the day start time you have set (9:00, for example) rather than 0:00.

The half-day snap-to works similarly, locking your tasks and milestones to the start time you have selected or the half way point between the start and end times you have chosen.

It is worth noting that few other online gantt chart products allow users to define tasks in units of less than a day, and even fewer allow you set the start and end times for a day. So even though we only unveiled ourselves to the public a month or so ago, we already offer many features more established project management apps lack.

But let's not blow our trumpet too much. There is still much to be done. Next task for us: dependancies. Thanks for reading!
