Ganttology is an online gantt chart maker. It can be used to create gantt charts that can be shared with colleagues and clients. Gantt charts are special timelines used to visualise progress of complex projects.
Ganttology is designed to be easy to use, so it can be used by anyone who is reasonably tech savvy. It will be of most interest to people who are managing complex time-based projects, whether that be a client commission to create a website or organising a wedding.
No, paying is not necessary. Ganttology has a free account that allows you to create a single fully-functional gantt chart. The account has the following limitations: You can only create one gantt chart. You cannot embed the chart on your own website. You can only add five people and 50 tasks to the chart.
Our free account is aimed primarily at giving people a chance to try out our software and its features, with the hope that they will be so thrilled by it that they will want to upgrade to one of our premium accounts.
To sign up with Ganttology, navigate to our home page - www.ganttology.com - click on 'Free sign-up' in the menu at the top and enter your username, email address and password in the panel that drops down.
Next agree to our terms and conditions by clicking the checkbox to the left of the 'I agree to terms and conditions' text. Finally, click on the 'Sign up' button.
You can now start creating your first chart by following the instructions on the page.
You log in to Ganttology by clicking the 'Login' menu option at the top right of the home page. You should then enter your username and password in the pop down panel that appears and click the login button. Assuming, you have entered all the details correctly, you now be logged in and able to start editing and creating gantt charts.
Firstly, you should select the 'Forgotten login details' link at the bottom of the login panel (which you can open by clicking on the 'Login' menu option at the top right of the screen). You will then be asked to enter the email that you used to sign up to Ganttology. Enter your email and click the 'Submit' button.
We'll send you an email with your username and a new password. You can then login with this password and then change the password by going to the 'Account Settings' panel on the home page when logged in.
If you don't receive an email from us or can't remember the email address you used to sign up with, then drop us an email at help@ganttology.com and we'll do our best to recover your details for you.
Firstly, you should follow the instructions in the above two FAQs (How do I log in to Ganttology? and I've forgotten my login details. What should I do?). If you still can't login then drop us an email at help@ganttology.com and we'll do our best to help you.
Our free account is great. It allows you to create a fully-functional and customisable gantt chart that you can share with clients and colleagues. But it does come with some limits. You can't create more than one chart. You can't embed a chart on your website. You can only add 50 tasks and 5 people to the chart.
To create multiple charts and to manage larger, more complex projects involving more steps and people, you will need to upgrade to our Bronze or Silver accounts.
1Firstly - if you haven't already done so - you will need to sign up for a free account with Ganttology. Click here for instructions on how to sign up.
2Now ensure that you are logged in to your account. You should now be on a page that lists your gantt charts and has a form to create a new chart. Scroll down to the bottom of this page and you will find a list of account options.
3Click the 'Buy now' button against the account you are interested in and you will be taken to the PayPal site where you will be asked to sign in to your PayPal account or enter your credit card details.
4Once you have finished the payment process, make sure you click the link to bring you back to Ganttology.com where a 'Thanks for signing up' message should be shown to you. Your account is now upgraded and you can immediately take advantage of your new premium features.
If you are not taken back to Ganttology, get an error message or can't access the premium features, please drop us an email at help@ganttology.com and we'll upgrade your account manually as soon as possible.

Sorry. Something must have gone wrong with the upgrade process. Please drop us an email at help@ganttology.com and we'll manually upgrade your account.
There are two ways you can do this. You can either cancel your subscription via your PayPal account. Or you can email us and we'll cancel your subscription ourselves. Either way, we do not give refunds for periods already paid. New charges will however stop immediately. You can also upgrade and downgrade to and from the premium options whenever you want to, with the above proviso that we won't refund you for periods you have already paid for.
If you haven't yet created an account with Ganttology, do so now - see here for how. If you have, then please ensure you are logged in.
1Now navigate to your account page. Here you will find a list of gantt charts you have already created and also a form for creating a new chart.
2Enter the required information into the form. The chart's title is the only field that is mandatory. If you are not sure what to enter into any of the fields, then hover over them with you mouse and a popup help panel will appear with instructions.
3Once you have filled in all the information, click the "Create new chart" button at the bottom. Your gantt chart will now be created and you will be taken to the charts page where you can start adding to and editing it. You will now likely want to add your first task to the chart - see 'Creating a task...' below.
1Navigate to the account page. Here (if you are logged in) you will find a list of charts you have already created and also a form for creating a new chart.
2Click on the 'edit' button and you will be taken to your chart's page where you can started editing and adding to it. On this page, you add new tasks, milestones and groups to your chart. You can also change all the chart's settings, such as theme, about text, zoom and so on.
Hover over the "Zoom Controls" option at the bottom right of a gantt chart, and a panel will pop up with zoom options. You can zoom in and out both time (horizontally) and bar size (vertically). Once you have selected a zoom level that works for you, click the "Save current zoom" option to save it to the database.
Once you have created your first chart (see here for instructions on creating a chart), you will probably want to create your first task, milestone or group. There are three ways you can add items to your gantt chart.
1At the bottom of the screen, hover over the 'Add New Task' button, and then drag a task, milestone or group from the panel that pops up onto the chart stage. Position the item where you want it and drop it by releasing your mouse button.
2Click on one of the '+' buttons that appear at the bottom of the chart and at the bottom of each group. Choose whether to add a task, milestone or group, enter the title of the item, and click return. You can then easily enter the title of a new item, or you can click the 'x' to stop adding items.
3Finally, you can hover over an existing item, and tap 'a' on the keyboard (or click on the menu option) to add a task, milestone or group after it.
Editing is easy. Simply click on the item you want to edit (or tap the 'e' button when hovered over it) and a panel will appear where you can change the item's title, progress, start and end dates etc. Hover over the field you want to edit and click to focus it. Press return when you have finished making changes. Finally, click the 'Save' button at the bottom right of the panel to save your changes to the database.
If you just want to change the title of the task, group or milestone, you can use the quick edit option. Simple tap 'q' when hovered over it.
To change the start date of a task, milestone or group, simply drag it left or right on the stage using your mouse. Alternatively - for tasks and milesones only - you can use the edit option and manually set the start and end dates using our date picker.
To change the duration of a task, move your mouse to the left or right of the item until an arrow appears, and then click and drag to extend or reduce the duration of the event.
Groups and projects work differently to tasks. You cannot directly change their duration. Rather, the duration of projects/groups automatically expands to match the tasks and milestones they contain.
If you need to set a start and end date for a project or group, simply add a milestone or task and move it to the start date you want and then add another milestone or task, marking the end of the project, and move it to your planned end date.
Ganttology provides a simple drag and drop interface. So to rearrange an item, simply click and drag it to where you want and then drop it by releasing the mouse button.
You can delete an item by tapping 'd' when hovered over it, or by choosing the 'delete' option from the menu.
To assign a person to a task, hover over the task, and tap the 's' button (or choose the 'assign person' option from the menu). In the popup panel, either choose a person from the dropdown menu and click 'Assign person' or create a new person, and then assign them.
You can add multiple people to a single task by repeating this process for each person.
Please note people can only be assigned to tasks. They cannot be assigned to groups or milestones.
There are two ways you can unassign a person from a task.
1Tap 's' or choose the menu option when hovered over the task to open up the 'Assign Person' panel. There will be an option for unassigning the person in the panel. Click it and confirm you want to unassign the person.
2Alternatively, you can hover over a person's thumbnail and choose the 'Unassign' option in the popup panel.
To create a person, you will need to open the 'Assign Person' panel. To do this, you should tap 's' when hovered over a task (or choose the 'Assign Person' option from the menu). You should click on the 'Create New Person' option. A panel will now appear where you can enter information about the person. Once finished, click the 'Save' option to save the person to our database.
You will need to have created and assigned a person to a task before you can edit them. Once you have done this, you can edit them by hovering over their icon and choosing the 'Edit' option. Make your changes and click the 'Save' button to save the changes to the database.
To share your chart, hover over the 'Chart Settings' button at the bottom left of the chart. Then, in the popup panel, set the 'Shareable' option to 'Yes' or 'Password Protected'. Next copy the url in the 'Share link' field and email it to people you want to share the chart with.
By default, your gantt charts are completely private. Only the account owner when logged into his/her account can view the charts. You can choose to share or password protect a shared chart in the 'Chart Settings' panel - see the bottom left of your chart.
Embedding is only available with our premium accounts. See above for instructions on how to sign up for a premium account. If you already have a premium account, follow these instructions:
1Open the 'Chart Settings' panel for your chart by hovering over the option at the bottom left of your chart.
2In the panel that pops up, set the shareable option to 'Yes'.
3Finally, copy the content of the 'Embed' field to your website. You can change the width and height attributes of the iFrame to change the size at which the chart will appear on your website.
This will depend on what type of account you have. The Bronze account offers 5,000 monthly views. Our Silver account gives you 20,000 monthly views.
If you go over your monthly embeddable views, the chart will not appear on your website. In its place will be a message and link to the chart on Ganttology.
